Loan charge-offs make it possible to remove from assets the balances considered uncollectible, while preserving the traceability needed for their management and possible recovery.
Below are the reference accounting entries, organized by stage of the process, for microfinance institutions in Nicaragua regulated by CONAMI.
Charge-Off of Interest and Fees
Entry in Balance-Sheet and Income-Statement Accounts
Accrued interest and fees receivable are charged off to remove these income items from assets when a loan becomes overdue or is classified in high-risk categories (“D” or “E”).

|---|---|---|
| 1408 Allowance for Uncollectible Loan Portfolio | Accumulated allowance for interest and fees | |
| 5202.02 Charge-Off of Interest and Fees on Loan Portfolio | Adjustment for insufficient allowance, if applicable | |

Charge-Off of Principal
Entry in Balance-Sheet and Income-Statement Accounts

|---|---|---|
| 1408 Allowance for Uncollectible Loan Portfolio | Accumulated allowance for principal | |
| 5201.01 Establishment of Allowance for Loan Portfolio | Adjustment for insufficient allowance, if applicable | |

|---|---|---|
| 1101 Cash / 1102 Banks | Cash recovered | |
